In this tutorial we explore the techniques involved in creating a human head (well not exactly human but close to that). Again, I started building the head with biospheres. I added a number of them to resemble the shape of the head. The images show the biospheres from the front and the side.

Biospheres (front view)

Bospheres (side view)

The red spots show where the centres of the spheres are. I know it is hard to figure out exactly where each sphere is, so I did a simple diagram to show this. Again, this is just a simple diagram. Moving the spheres round will give you a better indication of where they should be.

Simple biosphere diagram

A good trick here is to occasionally change the biospheres detail (preferences menu) so that you can see the object more clearly. Once you are happy with the position of the spheres click generate to produce the head. Mine looked like this

The biosphere head

As you can see its gonna take a lot of work to make him look more human. At first use the smudge brush, click in the middle of the nose and move it straight up. This will fix the spherical nose.

Now we are going to deepen the eye sockets. Change the simetry to left/right so that you paint identical strokes (mirrored on the Y axis). Use a small brush and paint on the left eye (the other one should appear too). After you are done, use the smooth brush to smooth the eyes.

Eyes done

Now we are going to use my favourite trick to create the mouth cavity. Since painting on the surface often produces unpredictable results, we are going to mask the area of interest and work on that. So click on Mask and paint something similar to this :

Masking the mouth

Remember that whatever is painted, is masked therefore it is not affected by any of the tools. Therefore we have to invert the mask so that we can work on the mouth. Now go back to Tools&Distorts and use a medium brush. You do not have to be precise with the brush since the area is masked. You should get something similar to this:

Mouth cavity done

Depending on your mask you can create diferent mouth shapes. He does look sinister now doesn't he? Well actually he is a very nice guy as you are gonna see in a minute. Go back to Mask editing. Clear the previous mask and using the rectangular mask select everything exept the top of the head.

Masking the face

Now smooth the mask and go back to the Tools. Click on the Noise distort and move the mouse to the right. Isn't it great? You've just discovered the cure for baldness. Hair grows magically out of nowhere.

Hair implants

Now we've got the main shape we can do all kinds of things to it. Lets create some eyebrows. Using the same technique we mask the eyebrows.

Masking the eyebrows

Now we paint with a small positive brush to bring the eyebrows out. I used the smooth brush as well.

Painting the eyebrows

You can see that small strokes are not clearly visible and that is because of the complexity of the object. We can change the detail of the model at any instant but that will slow things down. Anyway, there are a lot of things we can do to our object now like adding ears e.t.c. I will not bother with that. Instead I'm gonna paint my object. Click on Paint and choose a skin color. Click on the paint bucket to paint the whole object. Click on Mask and mask everything but the hair. Now go back to Paint and select a yellow colour. Paint on the hair. Select a darker colour and paint on the eyebrows.

Painting the head

Well it's not perfect and for sure I could have chosen better colours, but it's a beginning for creating objects like this. Again, experimentation is all you need. I finally added a few extra bits (eyes, headphones) to make him look funnier.

Final object

There you have it. A technique for creating human-like heads.
